Description
The Structured Treatment Program is an intensive time limited group treatment
service for clientswho have successfully completed a withdrawal process. It
provides bio-psycho-social assessment, education, counselling, and treatment
in collaboration with other components of the Addiction Services.
It is offered in both residential and non-residential settings.
The focus is on strengthening the clients personal coping skills and self efficacy
by providing basic information on addiction and the physical, emotional, cognitive
and spiritual effects. Feelings and attitudes are explored in asupportive environment
in an effort to improve client self esteem and personal growth.
Guiding Principles
The structured treatment program consists of a combination of educational and therapeutic
components intricately woven throughout the process, with an emphasis on the therapeutic
aspects of the program in an effort to maximize personal growth.
Program content is consistent with evidence-based practice in the field of addictions.
Clients must meet admission criteria prior to entry into a structured treatment program.
The assessment/screening process should involve the least intrusive means for the client.
Gender and culturally sensitive practice will provide the context for the delivery of
program content.
Program staff has an appropriate combination of skills, knowledge, academic
training and experience required to meet the goals of the program.
The self-help community makes a valuable contribution to the work of structured
treatment programs and therefore programs may utilize their services appropriately.
Objectives
To provide an intensive therapeutic experience for clients to reflect on their life
choices, create new opportunities for choice, and assist clients in achieving new
goals for change and/or for sobriety.
To provide time limited group therapeutic experience which reduces the isolation
and shame of theclient by providing a shared opportunity to identify with others who
have similar experiences, thoughts, and patterns of behaviours.
To provide individuals with a safe and supportive group forum where they
are able to engage in a reciprocal sharing process facilitating increased
awareness, personal growth, and empowerment.
To provide individuals with the tools and processes to express and explore
problem areas and/or issues regarding personal work that is vital to their recovery.
To offer residency for the following reasons:
1) therapeutic milieu of communal living,
2) an alternative to a home situation that is not conducive to recovery;
3) transportation is not viable, and
4) other specific circumstances that create barriers to treatment
To empower individuals to regain control of their lives, to instill in
the client the belief that they have the ability and the strength to deal
with life one day at a time, as well as the belief that hey can achieve and
maintain contented sobriety and/or significant harm reduction.

The Structured treatment program is a gender specific intensive time limited group
treatment service for clients who have successfully completed a withdrawal process.
It is offered in both residential and non-residential settings.
Treatment issues explored during this program will be pertinent to all
recovering individuals regardless of substance/activity of choice.
The focus is on strengthening the clients personal coping skills by providing
basic information on addiction and the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual effects.
Feelings and attitudes are explored in a safe and supportive environment in
an effort to improve client self esteem and personal growth.
The structured treatment program consists of a combination of educational
and therapeutic topics in an effort to maximize personal growth.
Clients must meet admission criteria prior to entry into a structured treatment program.
The group process aims to reduce isolation and shame by providing a
shared opportunity to identify with others who have similar experiences.
To empower individuals to regain control of their lives, to instill in the client
the belief that they have the ability and the strength to deal with life one day at a time.
Active group participation and attendance is mandatory for all sessions.
Referral Process
Admission to the structured treatment program is by referral only.
A referral is a process whereby a potential client requests admission or is recommended
for a structured treatment program.
Referrals will be accepted from Addiction Services clinicians
All referrals will consist of a copy of a completed current/updated assessment, a
completed referral form and the short intake form completed on assist
Potential clients must meet all program admission criteria and be appropriate for
the service being offered
Following notification of acceptance of a methadone client the referring
clinician will communicate to structured treatment program staff which pharmacy
their clients carries may be picked up at
All referred clients will be notified regarding their admission status in a timely manner
Referring clinicians will be notified via e-mail regarding admission status
If a client cannot be accepted to an intensive structured treatment program, a
recommendation for further treatment will be provided by program staff
Referrals should be received by program staff two weeks prior to program
start date and will be considered for admission based on date referral received
If the referral package is not complete it will be returned to the referral
source indicating information required
The referral must include a written assessment report, a completed STP referral form, (below)

as well as any other information deemed pertinent by the referral source.
Programs are Gender Specific and are open to Nova Scotia Residents.
Admission Criteria
The client is at least 19 years of age
The client is actively engaged with an addiction services clinician
The client recognizes that a problem exists and is actively prepared to address the problem
Demonstrates insight regarding his/her harmful involvement in alcohol/drugs and or gambling
The client is medically and psychiatrically stable
Clients will be physically withdrawn from their primary addictive substance/activity for a minimum of 14 days
prior to program start date and will not be subject to withdrawal symptoms while in the program
The client has had previous treatment experience including periods of sobriety
The client has the capacity to function within a group treatment environment
Clients with pending court dates and or outside appointments may not be eligible for the program
Clients currently taking mood altering medication and/or medication considered to be addictive are not
eligible for this program.
Client will respect and follow the rules and policies of the structured treatment program
Demonstrate appropriate behaviour and abstinence during the program
Clients must actively participate in all aspects of the program
Client must have an established residence
Program admission rests with the structured treatment staff and is based on the clinical interpretation of the admission
criteria and supporting documents.
