Group programs to help people plan how to stop using tobacco are offered in various communities in the Cape Breton District Health Authority and the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority.
Participants receive information and have an opportunity to discuss:
Their relationship with cigarettes and the addictive nature of nicotine.
Triggers – when and why they smoke.
Withdrawal symptoms – strategies for coping.
Lifestyle changes – stress management, healthy eating and physical activity.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy – participants are eligible to receive eight weeks of free nicotine patch or gum.
Group support is the most important component of the program.
